                                             Governor's Message

Another long winter has turned to spring. I am sure I am in better shape after all the snow shoveling. The weather is warmer and the days are filled with more sunshine. Summer must be coming and that means Summer Outing.

This year our Summer Outing will be in Portage, WI . We will have a unique event at two sites. One site will be The Fort Winnebago Surgeons' Quarters and the other will be The Indian Agency House. We will divide in two groups and take a guided tour at each site. The sites are quite close together and accessible. It will be a lot of fun and we can all get together and catch up. More information is available in the Summer Outing section.

Our Wisconsin Society has again been active this year. We did contribute to the General Society and everyone who goes to Congress will be treated to a new look at the Mansion. The Mayflower Benevolent Fund has again contributed to various causes around our state including the Wisconsin Historical Society, Milwaukee Historical Society and the Old Soldiers Home at the VA Center in Milwaukee.

Our Compact Luncheon was a great success this year. Thanks go, of course, to Ellen Kuchta for doing all the work. Governor General, Edward Delano Sullivan, was our guest and Guest Speaker. Governor Sullivan regaled us with stories about the Mansion and the work being done by the General Society on our behalf. He invited us all to attend the Congress in September. Governor Sullivan and his lovely bride, Betty, have a wonderful sense of humor and kept us amused during his entire stay. Did you know that the Governor General gets to stay in the Master Bedroom at the Mansion in Plymouth? Nice perk right? Except the Mansion has a daily tour schedule and the Governor must be up and gone by 8:30 in the morning and all his belongings out of site before the tourists arrive. Then he can't go back until dark. We certainly enjoyed the Sullivan's company and felt honored that Wisconsin was one of just a few states they-have traveled to as Governor General. .

We had some sad news this year as well. We lost a dear friend and former governor in William Henry Roddis II. Bill Roddis was Governor from 1984-87 and was an assistant to the Wisconsin Society and the General Society after that date. We will miss him and his wonderful sense of humor. We will also miss Irene Ketchum Warner of La Crosse and Iowa. Irene was 105 years young. She was brought up on a farm with horse drawn equipment and delivered milk and eggs by horse on the way to school in the morning. Just imagine what she saw during her lifetime.

Thanks go out to all the Board of Assistants for their hard work and dedication. The Mayflower

Benevolent Fund has been hard at work as well. My thanks to all of you for your help. See you all at the Summer Outing. .

Respectfully submitted, Robert C. Hunt, Governor

Silver Books Presentation

Fond du Lac Public Library was presented a 30-volume set of the Silver Books on Monday, May 19, 2008. The presentation was made by Dr. Marshall Colburn in memory of his grand aunt, Leila Abigail Janes who was Library Director from 1918 to 1956. Also in attendance were: Mrs. Ruth Colburn, niece of Miss Janes and Dr. Colburn's Mother, his wife Arlene and daughters Rebecca and Catherine, grand nieces of Miss Janes.

The Wisconsin Society was well represented by two former Governors: Barbara Bardeen Cobb and Mary Howden. Others in attendance were: Marie Rosenfeldt, Roger Cobb, MarJean and Neal Buck, and Cheryl Loehr, Assistant Library Director.

The library staff had some pictures of Miss Leila Janes during her tenure as Library Director that they brought out for display. Neal Buck welcomed everyone and introduced Dr. Colburn. Dr. Colburn talked about Miss Janes love for the Fond du Lac Public Library and dedication to library service and to the Fond du Lac Community. Dr. Colburn then presented the books to Cheryl Loehr, Assistant Library Director. Cookies and coffee were provided by the library after the presentation.

We received press coverage in The Reporter (a Sunday through Friday paper) on May 19th and 26th and in The Action (a semi-weekly paper Sunday and Wednesday) on May 25th with color pictures for the 26th and 25th coverage.

Thank you to Barbara Cobb for assisting in getting the Silver Books for the Fond du Lac Public Library. Thank you to Dr. Colburn for your help in getting the Silver Books and the presentation program. Thank you both for your guidance in putting the program and press releases together. Thank you to all who were able to come for the program.

Since the presentation, I have had an opportunity to talk to Cheryl Loehr and the publicity we were fortunate to get in the local papers has generated a lot of usage in just the few days the books have been out on the shelf. People have been coming in and asking where are the Mayflower Books? They are very pleased to have these books added to the Genealogy Section of the library and judging from the usage report, so is the community. It is very apparent that the community also thanks the Wisconsin Mayflower Society of Mayflower Descendants for these books.

Neal & Mar Jean Buck

                            Welcome Aboard the Mayflower

Buy a boarding pass for your 'trip' aboard the Mayflower, and aid in the expansion and renovation of the national headquarters in Plymouth, Massachusetts. All Mayflower descendants and friends are asked to participate in _the Millennium Voyage project that will. add new staffing, and, most important, preserve our lineage electronically. The ability to access these important historical documents will not only be of interest to us, but also make tracing genealogy easier for those family members to follow. The history of our ancestors will be at a touch of a button for us, as well as future historians.

How do you join our historical 'voyage'? Tickets sell for $25.00 each.  Your name will be placed on an official ship's log and printed in the Mayflower Quarterly.  For only $10.00 per line more you may add your Pilgrim's name (Betty, that may take a few lines) and any office you may have held, or do hold.  As an example,
$25 James Smith #99999 (Official Passenger)
$10 Pilgrim John Howland
$10 GA DGG 1965-1969
$10 Asst Historian 1§)75-1985
Total $55

As this is a donation that goes directly to Plymouth, consider purchasing a ticket for each of your family members. Ticket purchasers do not have to be Mayflower members so offer them to friends who may be interested in preserving the priceless documents housed at the General Society.

With your purchase, not only will your name be noted on the ship's log and in the Mayflower Quarterly, you will receive a, suitable for framing, commemorative ticket picturing the Mayflower in full sail. The ticket notes that by becoming a passenger the purchaser is entitled to all the rights and privileges of a Friend of the Mayflower Society. This tax-deductible contribution is a wonderful way to support the preservation of Pilgrim history.

Payments may be made in cash, check, or money order made payable to GSMD.  In Wisconsin, your local ticket agent is Bob Hunt. You may contact him by email at rhuntfam@earthlink.net or phone at 414-258-7033 (home) 414-581-0866 (cell). All tickets made by credit card must be made through the Treasurer General. Valerie Dingman is a National Finalist in the Senior Individual Exhibit category so she will be going to the national contest June 15-19, 2008 at the University of Maryland - College Park.

Each finalist designs their entry to reflect the annual theme. The theme for 2008 was Conflict and Compromise in History. It is really invigorating to see an auditorium "full of students excited about history and the work they do is really phenomenal.                                     Silver Books Committee Report
                                                            May 2008

The latest Wisconsin Public Library to receive a set of the Mayflower Five Generation Silver Books was the Fond du Lac Library thanks to the recommendation of board member, Neal Buck. The book plates for the Fond du Lac Library included the words, "In Memory of Leila Janes, Librarian". Leila Janes was an-outstanding librarian at the Fond du Lac library and great aunt of Marsh Colburn, a WI Society board member. Please refer to the article by Neal Buck for more details about this special presentation.

Because of the death of our dear friend and member. William H Roddis II, the board voted to put "In Memory of William H Roddis ll" on all the future bookplates for the Silver Books donated to the Milwaukee Public Library. The Roddis Family was very pleased with this decision, and Mrs. Roddis sent the Society a special "thank you".

This summer I will be visiting or writing to the libraries in Black River Falls, Darlington, and Rhinelander, WI. These libraries receive only a few volumes before the MBF of WI existed. The Mayflower Benevolent Fund of WI is our wonderful fund that pays for these book that are donated.

The La Crosse Library has a few Mayflower Five Generation Silver Books in its genealogy room, so this library will be placed on the list of possible receivers for the missing volumes.

If you know of a library that needs either some or all of the Mayflower Five Generation Silver Books, please contact me:

Barbara Bardeen Cobb, Chairperson
