Summer Outing
Wisconsin Mayflower Members by Year

                                             Governor's Message

Governor Christine Schlosser’s Message

It is an honor and privilege to serve as your Governor. I hope those that attended the summer outing enjoyed both the boat ride and the tour of Villa Louis. It was great to see some new faces as well as familiar ones. The summer outings are a relaxed event to get together with fellow society members and perhaps learn a little about Wisconsin. If anyone has suggestions for future outings (or would like to host one), please let me know. This year, we have also tried to cross-pollinate with the Minnesota Society. We invited them to our summer outing and they invited us to theirs. I decided to make the trek to Duluth in mid-August and had a wonderful time attending their events. I hope this is something that we continue and that more people can participate in each event. Wisconsin is a pretty big state so it may be closer / easier for those in Northwest Wisconsin to attend an event in Minneapolis. I can definitely state that they are a very welcoming society and would love to have some Wisconsin cousins join their meetings.

I also was able to attend the Mayflower Board of Assistants meeting in Annapolis this September. I drove out with Barbara Cobb (DGG) and Mary Howden – always an adventure to spend multiple days in a car with these dear friends. I highly recommend attending these meetings if time permits. It is good to see how the General Society works and to network with other state members to get some new ideas and rekindle old friendships. And sometimes there are some awe-inspiring moments – like visiting Fort McHenry on the 195th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore. We got to unfurl a replica of the original flag that inspired the lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner. The flag is huge – 30 ft by 42 ft – and to unroll it amid our Mayflower cousins was a definite goose bump moment! Next year, the meeting will be in San Diego so start making plans to visit sunny southern California.

As my first year as governor is nearing completion, I am all the more grateful and humbled to be a part of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Wisconsin. The key to any society’s success is in the people – and we have many great volunteers within our ranks. Tom Keyes plays such a vital role as publicity chair, web master and chair of the Scanning Committee. Just one of these jobs might seem daunting to many but Tom takes it all on and keeps us the envy of our neighboring societies! Wayne Weeks has been busy doing the normal secretarial tasks but also analyzing our membership and preparing an update to our Centennial Directory as we approach our 110th anniversary next year. John Bird has stepped in as treasurer – always a tough, time-consuming job – and his efforts are greatly appreciated. And speaking of treasurer, I want to sincerely thank Larry Ehren for his time as treasurer. He accomplished a lot in bringing our accounts together and keeping a steady hand on our funds during some shaky economic times. I could go on and on but the editor will probably cut me off so I will continue with more thanks in the next issue…

COMPACT DAY LUNCHEON

Our Speaker this year (2008) was John Gurda, famous Milwaukee Historian and author. Gurda has written eighteen books on Milwaukee history with subjects ranging from insurance companies to Milwaukee bungalows, from historic cemeteries to industry giants. The Making of Milwaukee, Gurda’s most ambitious effort, is 450 pages with over 500 illustrations. It is the basis for the Emmy Award winning documentary series of the same name presented on Milwaukee Public Television in 2006.

In addition to his work as an author, Gurda is a lecturer, tour guide, and a local history columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He is the winner of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Award of Merit. We are pleased John was our guest.

                                       ABOUT JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP

Children under 18 years of age who are descended from a MAYFLOWER Pilgrim may be eligible for Junior Membership even if their parents are not Mayflower Society members. A current Society member may sponsor any lineal descendant under 18 for Junior Membership by filling out a simple form and paying a one-time enrollment fee of $10.00 (no yearly dues). Children do not need to reside in Wisconsin.

Junior Members receive picture postcards, or letters and literature on their birthdays. Their parents receive a copy of our Newsletter twice a year. A Junior Member is eligible to apply for Regular Membership at age 18 or a Life Membership at any age. Please contact our State Historian for more information.

A Society member may also sponsor any child, possibly adopted or in a blended family, as a Junior Friend. He or she will receive a certificate similar to the Junior Member certificate, the same picture postcards, or letters and literature, and the Newsletters. The one-time enrollment fee is also $10.00. Junior Friends cannot become regular members unless descent from a MAYFLOWER Pilgrim can be documented.

New General Society Junior Membership Programs Announced

Susan Jones and Patricia Klusmeyer, Junior Membership Co-Secretaries

Our General Society Junior Chair, Debra Georgantis-Miller, has been hard at work developing exciting new programs for our Junior Members and Junior Secretaries. Her focus at present is to introduce and promote the brand new Mayflower Junior Facebook Project. While this is still in its beginning stage, a Facebook group “Mayflower Jr.” has been created. Junior Membership state Secretaries and Chairs have been invited to sign on as members. This is being developed as a place for postings and discussions for Debra and state society Junior Membership contacts.

An invitation to all our Junior Members to join this Facebook group will be officially announced in the next Mayflower Quarterly. Various programs are being planned in hopes of involving our Junior Members nationwide in Mayflower and Pilgrim related discussions and activities. As with all internet sites, we would advise that parents guide their interested Juniors in this process.

A Junior Members New England tour has been suggested with much interest. A committee has been formed in hopes this may become an annual or bi-annual event. More information about this project will be coming.

Other projects proposed were; creating a Junior Member data base, creating a Junior Chair manual, creating and publishing Mayflower Compact signer’s booklets, and starting a Mayflower class challenge.

   Scanning Report

Scanning Report by Neal Buck

Over 1000 pages have been scanned and we are now up to application #815 of 1375. That means we are a little over halfway through all the members applications.

Six steps involved in digitizing are assigning a scan #, scanning the digital image, editing the image, indexing the image, proofing the indexes, and reassembling the books.

Seven volunteers have logged 1426 hours since Compact day 2007.

We owe a huge “Thank You” to all our volunteers. Members are encouraged to help with this project. Instructions are easy to follow, located at the Sheboygan Historical Research Center. Members who have helped were asked to stand for recognition and applause.

                                    Silver Books Committee Report
                                                            Barbara Bardeen Cobb, Chairperson

Silver Book Distribution – Barbara Bardeen Cobb We have provided (9) Wisconsin libraries with complete sets of Silver Books.

The Fond du Lac Library Additional bookplates (100 for each of the libraries) were sent to Carolyn Doyle. She places the WI Society of Mayflower Descendants bookplate in the book before it is sent. The first 3 libraries to receive the silver books were contacted to check on missing volumes. Both Darlington and Rhinelander libraries were missing many volumes.

After much communication with GSMD and the librarians, and promises to keep more careful control over the books, the 30 missing volumes were replaced. A new library will be chosen to receive a set of silver books in 2009. Send suggestions for your library to Barbara, particularly if they have a genealogical section.

Mayflower Publicity Report

A total of 24 Wisconsin Newspapers were sent a news release featuring the Summer Outing, by e-mail three weeks prior to the gathering. I appreciate any Mayflower articles appearing in local papers being sent to me and I will contact state newspapers with a Compact Day notice prior to the date.

The WI Mayflower web site has 25,566 pages viewed since first published February 4, 2002 as of the writing of this report. 7.7 pages per day were opened since my 2008 September report. The Mayflower/Pilgrim “Book” page on our web has books recommended by our members. Kindly send me your latest Mayflower/Pilgrim read to include in this listing.

Would you like to have your family web linked to the WI Society of Mayflower Descendants web? This could be a special page with our WI member web links. Send me your web address. Webs would have to conform to General Society guidelines to be linked.

Picture posting on our web include November Compact Day 2008. I was unable to attend the 2009 Summer Outing and have no pictures from this event. We miss the pictures Mr. Jim Church supplied for so many years. We trust another Mayflower member will volunteer as Society Photographer. If you have pictures of a Mayflower event; please send to me for web inserting.

The preservation of Mayflower records is ongoing. We have a new volunteer to help keep the project moving. A thank you to the all the project volunteers for everything you are doing.

Respectfully Submitted by Tom Keyes, Public Relations

2009 Summer Outing

The Summer Outing was a lot like the rest of the summer – cool – and unlike much of the summer, we dodged a few raindrops but it didn’t put a damper on our fun! Our first adventure was a boat ride on the Mississippi under the expert guidance of Captain Jack and his first mate Norm.  We cruised upriver and saw adult and juvenile bald eagles.  One of the juveniles appeared to be taking one of his first flights – very awe inspiring and easy to see why it is such a symbol of our freedom as you watch one soar overhead.  We enjoyed tales from Captain Jack about his life as a captain of a riverboat barge and interesting bits of information about the flora and fauna along the river as well as a bit of history from retired school teacher Norm.  We had a scrumptious box lunch as we enjoyed the sights and sounds of the river – as well as visiting with our cousins.  The time flew by and we returned to the dock at Prairie du Chien after our 90 minute cruise.

Our next stop was a step back in time to around 1890 and the beautifully restored Villa Louis mansion along the shores of the Mississippi in Prairie du Chien.  Volunteer docents guided us through explaining about the house and its occupants around the last turn of the century.  They really helped to bring the house to life with stories about the family and their lives in rural Wisconsin in the 1890s/1900.  The house is one of the most accurately restored homes in the Midwest with actual photos from the time period to show what the house looked like back then.

The outing was attended by about 40 members and guests and great fun was had by all.

November 08 2008 Annual Meeting Minutes

The Annual Meeting of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Wisconsin was held at the Milwaukee Athletic Club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Governor Robert C Hunt called the meeting to order at 11:00 a.m., welcoming members and guests. Assistant Jerry Hill presented the invocation. Captain Jeff Stark led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Communications were received as follows:

Family of William H Roddis II expressed appreciation for our Society’s donation to the Milwaukee Public Library in honor of Bill, through a card from his widow, Setsuko Roddis.

· Regrets were expressed by Fern Leslie that she cannot attend the meeting.

· Regrets were expressed by Jane Frederick that neither she nor her daughter Sarah, CAR State President, are able to attend: Sarah is rehearsing The Nutcracker Suite.

· Regrets were sent from member Ruth McDonald, Stevens Point, who is unable to attend.

· Thanks were received from Suzanne DuCharme for the Mayflower materials, “Coming to America” for classroom education for her 5th graders.

· Email and postcards were received from author Glenn Alan Cheney, “Thanksgiving” promoting readership of this pertinent book.

· Special thanks were sent from Governor General Edward Sullivan and his wife Betty, for the hospitality and opportunity to see Milwaukee last November. Interestingly, as they flew home, his plane home was struck by lightening.

· Appreciation was expressed by Dr.Marilyn Baxter, Indian Agency House Chairman, for the opportunity to host the summer outing, which was well attended and enjoyable.

· Wisconsin Historical Society History Day winners expressed appreciation for the checks: from Valerie Dingman (Mineral Point mining), and Christian Blank (Slavery).

Minutes of the 106th Annual Meeting held on Nov.10, 2007 have been published. Correction is recommended. Page 7 previously read, “Delegates to the General Society Board of Assistants Meeting Sept 2008 will officially be Barbara Bardeen Cobb and Robert C Hunt” and that is incorrect.

The recommended correction reads as follows,

“According to Article 3 Sec. 5 of the Bylaws, the position of Deputy Governor General and Assistant General will be offered respectively to the immediate past Governor of the Society and the incumbent Governor to represent the Society on the Board of Assistants of the Mayflower Society prior to the triennial meeting.

Past Gov. Barbara Bardeen Cobb has accepted the nomination for DGG.

Likewise, Robert C Hunt has accepted the nomination for AG.

John Bird moved to approve the correction, it was seconded, and a unanimous vote carried the motion.

Treasurer Larry Ehren reported for the fiscal year 11/01/2007 – 10/31/2008. Motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report made by Rita Kiley, second made by Mary Howden, and approval confirmed by unanimous vote.

Secretary Report – Charlene Janeczko-King

Reporting attendance at all meetings and Summer Outing, she printed and distributed the meeting minutes, bylaws changes, and directives from the General Society. She sent a welcome letter to all new members, and corresponded by email and phone to potential members, members, and officers. Reports to the Secretary General were sent in prior to the deadlines; however the triennial meeting delegate list did not reflect our incoming AGG and DGG nominees. The candidates were not installed at the national meeting.

Acting DGG Barbara Bardeen Cobb and Acting AG Robert C Hunt will be installed at the Sept 2009 meeting in Plymouth. Sincere regrets were expressed for any distress that this omission may have caused. She helped the Compact Day Luncheon Chairman in making nametags, place cards, and favors.

Historian Report– Joan Pekowsky

Reporting as published in the Fall Newsletter, this year we have 26 new members and 2 more since publication. We have 7 applications pending. Nineteen supplementals have been approved and 6 are pending. Four supplementals are on file waiting to be sent: only one supplemental per member can be submitted at a time.

A previously rejected application was resubmitted and approved.

Another supplemental was approved based on a line developed by a WI member.

The Digitizing Project is progressing well, and often papers are returned in even better shape and order. The National Society has found the actual cost to process paperwork is higher than being charged, and therefore the fee will increase. The postmarked date (when the paper is sent to the state historian) will determine the fee.

If postmarked up until 12/31/2008 when sent to the state, and then received by National on or before 6/30/2009, the current fee will apply. Expect a flurry of paperwork to slow the process as many people will try to beat the deadline and price increase.

There is good news for Howland descendants. Hope and Elizabeth five generation books are finished. They are not silver, and can be purchased from Picton Press for approximately $75.00.

Report by Jerry Hill

My report was published in the newsletter, highlighting the DNA program at the Plymouth meeting. Registrars’ duties have been based on documentation. DNA evidence can prove family relationships, and this is now accepted by the General Society. Joining a family DNA program such as Family Tree in Dallas, TX can be instrumental. A bylaws change now confirms that Membership decisions (disapproval, expulsion) are best left to the discretion of the state society. Counselor Mike Phillips was reelected despite a challenging campaign.

Roll Keeper  ReportRuth Anderson

This officer works in conjunction with the historian and treasurer to maintain an accurate and current database of membership. This includes adding new members, reporting deaths, dropped members and updating addresses. A report of new members, address changes and deaths for each newsletter. Labels are printed for the newsletter mailings and a directory is published at the beginning of each administration. The next directory will be published in 2009.

Expenses incurred in 2008 include:

for mailing of labels to the newsletter editor 5.06

for address correction service by USPS (Fall newsletter) 5.50

for CDs, CD envelopes, and labels to provide directory updates to officers. 33.95

TOTAL EXPENSES in 2008 $70.44

Next year will be quite different as there will be the cost of a new directory. At this time the database and directory files are current. An updated version has been burned to CD for the officers. This practice safeguards our database by storing it in more than one place.

Membership on Nov 8, 2008 is 485.

25 New members in 2008

26 New members since last Compact Day

12 Deaths reported in 2008

2 Resignations

Deputy Governor General

Report of GSMD Board of Assistants Meeting – September 12, 2009, Annapolis, Maryland

Barbara Bardeen Cobb, DGG Wisconsin

Roll call was taken and delegates from 43 States, the District of Columbia and Canada were in attendance. The following paragraphs contain some of the business covered at the meeting.

To help members recognize that the Deputy Gov. Gen. & Assistant Gen. Delegates from each state to the Annual Board of Assistants Meeting are members of the GSMD Board, new neck medallions are being designed for the DGG & AG’s to wear. These medallions will be similar to the one worn by each state Governor, but will be made of silver instead of gold.

Treasurer General Carroll Gosslee reported that during October, 2008 the GSMD’s funds were transferred from the Bank of America to Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. Bank. This proved to be a very good move as our assets as of September, 2009 have increased by $1,000,000. He also has implemented actions on cost saving initiatives for landscaping at the GSMD Museum House and the printing of the “Quarterly”.

Historian General, Paul Bumpus reported that as of now, the submitting of new applications and supplements is less than in recent months. For example in August, 104 applications were sent in. HG Bumpus did not know if this was a refection of the economy, a large number of new State Historians, or the increase in the prices of these applications or supplements.

State Societies are encourages to start planning how their state will celebrate the 400th Anniversary in 2020 of the land of the Pilgrims. The GSMD does have a 2020 committee working with other Plymouth, MA organizations putting together plans for this very special occasion.

Captain General, Kenneth Calison is presently working on a flag etiquette book that will be distributed to all State Captains when it is completed.

The following three policies were passed at the meeting and a write up for each will be on display at our Compact Day Luncheon, November 12th: Whistle Blower, Conflict of Interest & Privacy.

A donation from the Hamilton Roddis Foundation was mentioned thanks to the family or our deceased member, William Roddis II.

Editor of the “Quarterly” Alice Teal received the “Distinguished Service Award”.  Alice announced that there would be a “Diamond Jubilee Edition” of the “Mayflower Quarterly” available for a reduced pre-publication price of $40.00 + $12.00 shipping. Applications for the “Diamond Jubilee Edition” will be available at the Compact Day Luncheon and on the GSMD web site.

Barbara Williams, Chairperson of the Historic Sights Committee said that she is in the process of putting together an updated book listing the many GSMD historic sights. She is also planning a 2011 trip entitled “New Beginnings” which will follow our Pilgrim ancestors from their land at Providence and beyond. This tour will take place following the 2011 GSMD Triennial Congress in September, 2011. Any one interested in this tour may participate.

Junior GSMD Chairperson, Debra Miller has set up a GSMD Junior’s face book on the internet.

The YDNA project for our male Mayflower ancestors is continuing using the signature of three well proven donors for each passenger before any conclusion is made that another person matches that passenger.

All members are asked to share their application papers with illegible relatives who are not members with the possibility that they will become members.

The Five Generation Books Committee is now also working on Six Generation Books which will be published when completed. The State Societies were thanked for supporting the GSMD by ordering and distributing these very well written books about descendants of our Pilgrim ancestors.

The new 107 paged book, “Strangers and Pilgrims Travellers and Sojourners” by Jeremy D Bangs is now available thought the GSMD. It is a well written book about Leiden and the foundations of Plymouth Plantation.

The GSMD’s library is now enlarging the storage files for applications by having a new system of fixed and rolling cabinets installed. This will enable the storing of all applications at one site making the research process more convenient for the library staff.

The Reproductive Technology Committee is studying how to approach non traditional lineages.

GSMD’s web site is being upgraded and within a year will contain a member’s only sight. Also the “Quarterly” will be offered on the site together with a pay for research section to encourage new membership.

Members who are interested in writing about their female ancestors found on their Pilgrim lineage papers are asked to submit these articles to the editors of the “Quarterly”.

Pres. Gen. Judith Swan has implemented this as part of her “Women of the Mayflower” emphasis.

Application can now be turn in using the name of any passenger on the “Mayflower”, male or female, adults or children. The “Quarterly” will print such a list. State Societies are encouraged to put the same kind of list in their membership directories.

California here we come! The September, 2010 Board of Assistants Meeting will take place in San Diego, CA. Everyone is invited!

Thank you again for allowing me to be one of the two delegates from Wisconsin who attend the GSMD’s Annual Board Meeting.

Assistant General’s Report

Tour Report of the 2009 GSMD Board of Assistants Meeting

Robert Hunt, AG Wisconsin

Annapolis, the capital of Maryland, was the host city for our General Society Board of Assistants meeting. This small seaport town is loaded with history and the Maryland Society certainly put its best foot forward to entertain the many cousins who attended the meetings.

The capital of Maryland was the country's capital when the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War, was signed here. All four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence had impressive homes in Annapolis, which still stand today.

Wisconsin was represented by DGG Barbara Cobb, AG Robert Hunt, Governor Chris Schlosser, and Mary Howden, Past Governor. The ladies toured Gettysburg on the way to Annapolis but still found time to tour the Maryland capital.

The Friday tour started with a trip to The United States Naval Academy. Started in 1850 as the Naval School at Ft. Severn, it became the United States Naval Academy in 1950. The first class had 50 midshipmen on ten acres of land to a brigade of approximately 4,400 midshipmen on the most beautiful 338 acres of historically blended architecture. Degrees are offered in twenty two majors and most midshipmen carry two with at sea training during the summers. Lunch, with Maryland Crab Cakes, was served in the Officers Dining Room.

Government has always played a major part in the ongoing operations of Annapolis. The next stop on our tour took us to the same State House where George Washington tendered his resignation as General of the Continental Army following the Revolutionary War. It is still charged with energy during the three months every year the Maryland General Assembly meets in its chambers. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor have their offices there, and it is used for a number of state functions throughout the year. It is quite small in comparison to our capital in Madison, but it does have a “stairway to nowhere,” and a tiny door leading to the “ladies visiting balcony.”

The tour finished with a windy, rainy boat ride around the Academy and up the Severn River where sailboats from a local yacht club and midshipmen from the Academy were racing. Many seemed to be practicing the art of capsizing and recovery. For a brief while, the 60’ tour boat was in the capable hands of an old salt, Robert Hunt. The Captain even asked the former Governor if he would like to land the boat. He wisely declined and everyone returned safely.

Tours of Baltimore, named after Lord Baltimore, followed on Sunday and were interspersed with a dinner at the Midtown Tavern, which has been in Annapolis since 1750, and meeting the owner of a fine Italian seafood restaurant with old mafia connections. Art galleries and curio shops abound and shopping is all within easy walking distance.
